How to calculate the engagement rate on LinkedIn
There are two common methods for Engagement rate (ER) to calculate on LinkedIn. Both are common - there is no "right" or "wrong", just different approaches.
1. Private engagement rate (including all interactions)
This is the most comprehensive and accurate method - and the one we use for our monthly benchmarks:
📌 Post ER = (Likes + comments + shares + video views + link clicks) ÷ reach
📌 Page-ER = average of all post-ERs within a certain period (e.g. last month)
2. Private engagement rate (only likes, comments & shares)
Some marketers only concentrate on the "classic" interactions:
📌 Post ER = (Likes + Comments + Shares) ÷ Reach
📌 Page-ER = average of all post-ERs within a certain period of time
The idea behind it? Likes, comments and shares are real, visible interactions, while video views and link clicks are more "light" actions. However: When someone watches a video, isn't that also a form of engagement? Opinions on this differ.
What influences the engagement rate on LinkedIn?
Many factors determine how much interaction your posts receive on LinkedIn. Here are a few of the most important ones:
- Interaction behavior: Are your posts more likely to be liked or commented on? How often are they shared?
- Content format: Do text-only posts work better than images or videos?
- LinkedIn algorithm: Changes to the newsfeed algorithm can have a direct impact on your visibility.
- Topics & contents: Which topics generate particularly high levels of commitment?
- Posting time: What time of day and what day of the week do you post?
- Hashtags & mentions: Do you use relevant hashtags or tag other profiles?
LinkedIn rewards high-quality content that stimulates real discussion - so don't be afraid to address controversial or in-depth topics!
