How has the organic reach on Facebook developed?

Facebook is on the move - and this also applies to organic reach. Here you can see the trend over the last twelve months: the monthly average values are anything but constant. This is precisely why it is so important not to simply look at your own performance in isolation, but to compare it with the general trend.

DotSimple shows you at a glance how your own reach is developing over time - across all channels and available at any time.

How to calculate your organic reach on Facebook

In short: Organic reach shows how many of your followers (page likes) see your posts - without you having to use an advertising budget.

The formula is simple:

📌 Post ORR = (organic reach of a post / number of followers)
📌 ORR profile = average of all post-ORRs within a certain period (e.g. last month)

If you promote (boost) posts, two numbers will be displayed: Organic range and Paid reach. ORR refers exclusively to organic reach - in other words, how many of your followers actually see your posts without you paying for them. If your value is very low (for example, in the single-digit percentage range), it might be time to think about a paid strategy.

What influences organic reach on Facebook?

Well, that's the million dollar question. Luckily, social analytics can help you figure out which types of posts have achieved above-average reach in the past. Basically: The more engagement a post gets, the greater the chance that it will be shared organically.

A few factors that play a role:

  • Interaction behavior: Are your posts liked, commented on or shared?
  • Format selection: Images, videos, links - which content is best received by your community?
  • Algorithm updates: Facebook regularly changes how content is displayed.
  • Topics & contents: Some topics trigger more commitment than others.
  • Posting times: When is your community active?
  • Tags & hashtags: Do you mention other pages or use relevant tags?

By the way: If your analysis includes posts with a ORR of over 100 % discover - yes, you can! This simply means that your post goes viral and reaches people who haven't even liked your page. This is particularly common with smaller pages.

So, forget the myth that organic reach on Facebook is dead - it's alive, it's evolving, and with the right strategy you can increase it!
