How has the click rate on Facebook developed?
If you want to be successful on Facebook, you should not look at your own performance in isolation, but compare it with the overall trend. Our data shows this: The monthly average CTR never remains constant for long. A look at the figures for the past year shows how the values have developed - sometimes upwards, sometimes downwards. It is therefore worth regularly comparing your own performance with the current average.
DotSimple shows you at a glance how your own reach is developing over time - across all channels and available at any time.
How to calculate the click-through rate (CTR) on Facebook
The good news: CTR is one of the easiest metrics you can calculate.
📌 Post CTR = (link clicks / reach)
📌 Profile CTR = average of all post CTRs within a certain period (e.g. last month)
But beware: Not all clicks are the same! Facebook distinguishes between:
- Link clicks: Direct clicks on URLs
- All clicks: Includes link clicks as well as clicks on hashtags, page tags and "Show more" links
Facebook charges a CTR for link clicks and a CTR for all clicks - and the two figures can differ massively. Some marketers like to report on the bloated "All Clicks CTR"but that is deceptive. Why? Because it doesn't allow a clear comparison between channels. And that's exactly the point: How many people have seen your post - and how many have actually visited your website?
What influences the click rate on Facebook?
If you want to improve your CTR, there is a very clear lever: the link post structure.
Here are some things that can directly affect your CTR:
- Link cards: Facebook automatically generates a Link Cardwhen you insert a URL into the post editor. This contains an image, a headline and a description - based on Open Graph tags or, if not available, on the standard metadata of your website.
- Post variants: You can decide whether to keep the link card or replace it with your own image or video. If you leave it in, you can also remove the URL from the text to make the post look tidier.
- Clickable elements: Depending on how your post is structured, different elements can be clickable - and this has a big impact on the CTR.
In short: It depends on how the post is presented visually and what encourages people to click.Test different approaches and find out what works best for your target group!
